NMUN•NY REGISTRATION PROCEDURE |
HOW TO REGISTER |
| 1. GATHER INFORMATION >> |
1) Determine how many student delegates will attend within a range of five (5). For example – 10-15 students. |
2) Verify contact information (mailing address, phone, fax, e-mail) for the faculty advisor and/or head delegate.
E-mail addresses are particularly important to receive your assignment and other updates. |
3) Decide how you will pay the school registration fee (varies by conference), for 2009 NMUN•NY it is US $200.
|
|
a. By Visa or MasterCard on-line when you register (using our secure server).
b. By Check or Money Order. |
|
|
• You may indicate on-line that you will submit your check or money order by mail. Note: Your application will not be processed until the payment is received.
• Plan ahead if requesting a school check. Universities may take six or more weeks to process a check request.
Submitting the request is not enough; the actual check must be received by NCCA/NMUN by the preferred deadline (15 October for New York) to be ‘on time’ – so turn in requests early and follow-up to make sure the check was actually sent (or use another form of payment).
• NCCA will only accept checks from the school or faculty advisor; Money Orders are also accepted.
• Checks should be made payable to “NCCA” and mailed to:
Michael Eaton, NCCA Executive Director
3489 Valento Circle
St. Paul, MN 55127-7171 |
|
c. By Wire Transfer – contact Director of Program Karen Baumgaertner, karen@nmun.org for more information including additional fees. |
|
| 2. DETERMINE COUNTRY PREFERENCES >> |
| 1) Select ten (10) Member States, Observers or NGOs you would like to represent. |
| |
a. Review the matrix (link is found at www.nmun.org/considering.htm). It indicates the committee assignments of each country to be represented at the simulation. An example of how to read the matrix is provided here.
b. Consider requesting countries based on your interest in certain topics or regional issues. A complete list of topics is found at www.nmun.org/considering.htm
c. Compare the countries of interest to the anticipated size of your delegation. The .pdf files on the Web site are available either (1) in alphabetical order or (2) in order of minimum number of students required. |
| |
|
• Each assignment lists a minimum and maximum number of delegates (see example below).
• Only request countries whose minimum and maximum delegate numbers are in a range your program can support.
For example – if you are bringing 8-12 delegates, you will not be assigned a country that can support 14-20 delegates.
• To best accommodate the large number of schools attending, we recommend you request countries that will result in you bringing two (2) delegates where allowed.
• Note: Head delegates who do not sit on a committee can attend in addition to the maximum number listed on the matrix.
|
| |
d. Review your selections and make sure no more than three (3) are members of the Security Council.
e. Each registration is eligible for up to two (2) assignments. If you anticipate needing more than two assignments, please consult with the Secretary-General (secgen@nmun.org) before registering to receive additional information and instructions. |
|
EXAMPLE OF MATRIX CURRENT MATRIX FOUND ON INDIVIDUAL CONFERENCE PAGE
In this example, Afghanistan has full representation on the General Assembly Plenary, General Assembly 4th, CEIRPP, UNWTO, WHO and IHP (denoted by •). If its status were as an observer it would be denoted by an o. The MINIMUM number of delegates for representing this country is 6 and the MAXIMUM number is 12. |
 |
2) Consider Applying for One of the Additional Security Council Simulations at NMUn•NY.
|
|
a. At NMUN•NY ONLY, we will simulate an additional Security Council independent of the rest of the conference. |
|
|
• For schools / individuals with 1-2 person delegations, this may be an ideal assignment to request.
• For schools assigned a country not on the Security Council, this could allow you to send 1 - 2 delegates to a
separate Security Council simulation representing one of the Security Council Members.
Note: You would thus need to prepare to be a different country in that Security Council than in the rest of
the committees. |
|
b. You will be able to indicate your interest on the on-line application.
c. The additional council is independent of the rest of the conference. For example – if you are assigned
France on Security Council “B” and Bolivia for the rest of the conference, what the school assigned France in the overall
NMUN does in other committees does not affect you on Security Council “B”, nor do your statements in the Council impact
the rest of the committees at the conference. This additional independent council is intended to give more
delegates, if interested, the opportunity to sit on the Security Council.
d. The additional council is intended for experienced delegates, not first-time participants. It is our intent that no school
have more than one Security Council assignment, provided adequate interest in the additional councils.
e. Note: Delegates selected for these councils can attend in addition to the maximum number listed on the matrix for an
assignment. |
|
| 4. REGISTERING FOR NMUN•NY>> |
Note: Registering for other NMUN locations follows a similar process but with different timelines. For smaller venues, country assignments are typically within a month of registration opening and on an ongoing basis.
1) Registration open 1 Sept. each year on a space available basis - contact secgen@nmun.org for details.
2) Follow the on-line instructions to enter the data from the previous steps.
3) Indicate payment method and be sure it is received by 15 October to be considered in the first round of assignments.
4) Decide if interested in an assignment to an additional Security Council simulation and follow instructions if so (if not assigned to a country on the Council in the main simulation).
5) Submit your registration.
|
|
4. SUPPORT YOUR REQUEST >> |
1) Consider providing the Secretary-General (secgen@nmun.org) a rationale for your requests that will be reviewed when making country assignments.
2) Reasons offered must be confined to one page total. You may wish to consider using bullet points and/or only state the reasons for your top few choices.
3) Strong rationales often include information such as: |
|
|
• Is there a particular academic strength at your university linked to your preference?
• Do you have students or a faculty member who might add to your preparation?
• What other experience do you have with MUN in general and the NMUN in particular? |
|
| 5. CONFIRMATION >> |
1) Print the e-mail confirmation you receive when registering for your records.
2) For NMUN•NY, a mass e-mail will be sent by 18 October confirming that your application and payment were received ‘on time’ for the first round of assignments. If you do not receive this e-mail by this date from NMUN – contact secgen@nmun.org!!!
|
6. PLAN AHEAD >> |
Make note of the other important dates on-line (www.nmun.org/dates.htm) for NMUN•NY; check individual pages for other venues. and mark your calendar. |
